Meteor explodes over northeastern United States

A meteor exploded over the northeastern United States on May 30, sending loud booms and shaking across parts of Massachusetts and New England.

NASA and the US Geological Survey said the event was a suspected bolide and produced a blast equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT, which matters because rare atmospheric fireballs can be mistaken for earthquakes or other hazards.

  • Bright meteor fireballs can be visible even in daylight if they are large enough.
  • Most meteors burn up high in the atmosphere before reaching the ground.
  • Sonic booms from meteors can travel farther than many people expect.
