Alibaba signs strategic AI framework with Pakistan government

Alibaba’s Qwen unit and the government of Pakistan agreed on a strategic framework in Islamabad on May 25 to expand the country’s digital economy.

The deal is meant to support industrial AI use, exports and fintech while strengthening ties between Pakistan and Chinese technology firms. It matters because it shows how AI partnerships are becoming part of wider economic and geopolitical competition in Asia.

  • Pakistan has been a major testing ground for Chinese companies seeking markets beyond Southeast Asia.
  • Islamabad is one of the world's youngest capital cities, built to replace Karachi as Pakistan’s administrative center.
  • Large language models like Qwen are often adapted for local languages and business uses before wider rollout.
