Asian powers turn to commercial Arctic shipping

China and South Korea are increasing use of commercial Arctic shipping routes for cargo between Asia and Europe, according to reporting published on May 27, 2026.

One planned trip took 20 days after a storm in the Norwegian Sea, still faster than rail through Eurasia, the Suez Canal, or the route around Africa.

The shift matters because warming seas and changing trade patterns are opening a faster seasonal corridor that could reshape long-haul shipping.

  • The Arctic Ocean has become more navigable in some seasons as sea ice declines.
  • South Korea is among the world’s largest shipbuilding and shipping nations.
  • A shortcut route can save time, but it also increases exposure to severe weather and limited rescue coverage.
