China’s BeiDou expands lead in Belt and Road markets

China’s BeiDou navigation system has gained a larger share of positioning, navigation and timing products in countries that joined the Belt and Road Initiative, according to an industry white paper released on Monday.

The report says BeiDou-compatible products now lead GPS and other rivals across that network, underscoring China’s push to widen the global reach of its technology standards.

  • BeiDou’s name comes from the Chinese term for the Big Dipper constellation.
  • China completed its global BeiDou system in 2020, later than the U.S. GPS network.
  • Satellite navigation accuracy can improve when countries adopt the same timing standards across industries.
