Ebola case confirmed in rebel-held Congo arearebel-held Congo area
A case of Ebola was confirmed in South Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Thursday, according to the rebel alliance controlling the area.
The case was reported hundreds of kilometres from the outbreak’s epicentre, raising concern that the virus may be spreading beyond the original zone and complicating containment efforts.
- Ebola was first identified in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now the DRC.
- South Kivu is home to Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes and a major regional transport corridor.
- Rebel-held areas often make disease control harder because aid workers may need special security arrangements.
