Five villagers found alive in flooded Laos cave

Rescuers in central Laos found five of seven villagers alive on Wednesday after they were trapped in a flooded cave for more than a week.

Teams from Laos and Thailand are still searching for the two missing people, and the case matters because it shows how dangerous cave rescues remain and how specialized divers can make a difference.

Lao rescuers

Local rescuers said the main focus is now reaching the two people still missing while keeping the survivors safe. They described the operation as difficult because of floodwater, darkness and unstable conditions inside the cave.

Thai divers

Thai divers involved in the mission said the discovery of five survivors is a major breakthrough after days of uncertain search work. They see the rescue as a race against time and are drawing on cave-diving experience from past operations.

  • Laos has many limestone karst formations, which create extensive cave systems across the country.
  • The 2018 Thai cave rescue became a global reference point for underwater cave operations.
  • Cave rescues often depend on volunteers, not only professional emergency services.
