Hungary’s Magyar moves to remove President Tamás Sulyok

Hungary’s new prime minister, Péter Magyar, said on Monday that his government will seek to remove President Tamás Sulyok, after meetings in Budapest and amid a plan to change the constitution.

The push marks a major test of Hungary’s post-election power balance and could reshape how the country’s institutions work.

Government allies

Supporters of Magyar say the president should not be able to block the new government’s agenda after years of rule under former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. They argue constitutional changes are needed to clear out officials tied to the previous system.

President Sulyok’s office

Sulyok’s office said the calls for his resignation damage the authority of the presidency and interfere with how the office functions. It has also sought a legal review of the dispute.
