Israel approves IDF museum at former UNRWA site in Jerusalemformer UNRWA site in Jerusalem
Israel approved plans on Sunday to establish an IDF museum and defence offices at the former UNRWA compound in Jerusalem during a special meeting on Jerusalem Day.
The move comes amid long-running accusations over UNRWA and its role in the wider Israel-Hamas war, and it adds another flashpoint to the dispute over Jerusalem and Gaza.
Israeli Government
Israeli officials present the decision as a way to repurpose a site they say should reflect Israel’s security history and state institutions. They link the move to allegations that some UNRWA staff were involved with Hamas and the October 7 attack.
UNRWA and Palestinian View
UNRWA and many Palestinians see the compound as part of a broader effort to weaken the agency and tighten Israeli control in East Jerusalem. They argue that the agency’s work is tied to refugee support and to the status dispute around the city.
- UNRWA operates in five main fields: Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
- Jerusalem's status is one of the most contested issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
- Jerusalem Day usually follows the Hebrew calendar, not the Gregorian calendar.
