Mali sentences French diplomat to 20 years in prison

Mali’s military-led government sentenced a French diplomat to 20 years in prison in Bamako on Friday after accusing him of helping destabilise the country.

France rejected the allegation and said its official was only carrying out a security cooperation mission. The case deepens a long-running rift between Bamako and Paris and adds to Mali’s wider security and diplomatic isolation.

Malian Government

Mali’s authorities present the case as part of efforts to defend state security and punish outside interference. They say the French official was involved in a destabilisation plot that threatened the country.

France

France denies the accusation and says the diplomat was on an official security cooperation mission. Paris portrays the sentence as unfounded and harmful to already strained relations with Bamako.

  • Mali borders seven countries, making instability there a regional concern for the wider Sahel.
  • France once maintained one of its largest military presences in Mali before relations sharply deteriorated.
  • The Sahel is a major transit zone for armed groups, smuggling routes, and displaced populations.
