Mozambique says five citizens killed in South African anti-immigrant attacks

Mozambique said five of its citizens were killed during anti-immigrant violence in South Africa over the weekend, with the unrest reported in and around Mossel Bay on the southern coast.

The violence came amid protests against undocumented immigration and matters because it has drawn cross-border concern about the safety of migrants in the region.

Mozambican Government

Mozambique has described the deaths as xenophobic attacks on its nationals in South Africa. Officials say many more Mozambicans were caught up in the unrest and are seeking accountability for the killings.

South African Police

South African police said they found the bodies of two Mozambican men with assault injuries and a South African teenager with stab wounds in separate incidents. Their account points to multiple violent episodes during the wider unrest rather than a single confirmed attack scene.

  • South Africa hosts one of Africa’s largest migrant populations, including many workers from neighboring states.
  • Mozambique and South Africa share a long land border and deeply connected labor markets.
  • Western Cape province includes major port towns that attract both commerce and migration.
