Portugal and Austria win UN Security Councilwin UN Security Council seats over Germany
The United Nations General Assembly elected Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, Zimbabwe and Kyrgyzstan to the Security Council in New York on June 3, 2026.
Germany failed to win one of the Western Europe and Others Group seats, while Portugal and Austria secured the two places reserved for the bloc.
The result matters because the 10 elected council members help shape UN responses to wars, sanctions and other global crises for two-year terms.
UN Diplomatic View
Supporters of the result see the vote as a routine renewal of regional representation on the Security Council. They note that the elected members will bring different national priorities to debates on peace, sanctions and crisis management.
German Perspective
Germany’s loss is likely to be read in Berlin as a diplomatic setback after years of seeking a stronger council role. The vote also underscores how competitive elections for non-permanent seats can be, even for large European powers.
- Germany has served on the council six previous times.
- Trinidad and Tobago is one of the smallest states ever elected to the council.
- The Security Council has 15 members, but only five hold permanent veto power.
