Russia says Ukraine used Storm Shadow missiles in Sevastopol attack

Russian-installed officials in Crimea said on Wednesday that Ukraine fired Storm Shadow missiles and sent more than 20 drones at Sevastopol, the main port city on the Russian-occupied peninsula.

The reported strike is part of the wider Russia-Ukraine war and highlights the continued reach of Ukraine’s air campaign against Russian military and energy targets.

Authorities in Sevastopol said air defenses shot down more than 20 Ukrainian drones and that Storm Shadow missiles were also used in the attack. They presented the incident as another cross-border raid on Russian-controlled territory.

RFE/RL Framing

RFE/RL said Ukraine has used Storm Shadow missiles in its campaign against Russian military and energy sites. It framed the attacks as an effort to reduce Moscow’s revenue and weaken its ability to keep fighting.

  • Crimea’s ports have long mattered because they support naval control over the Black Sea.
  • Storm Shadow is known as SCALP in French service.
  • Sevastopol has been fortified for centuries because of its deep-water harbor.

Russia-Ukraine War

Russia and Ukraine are locked in an retaliatory long-range drone and missile war that now strikes deep into both countries, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Crimea, and major Ukrainian cities like Kyiv and Dnipro. Ukrainian forces launched one of their largest drone attacks on June 26, striking 12 Russian regions and hitting key energy targets, while Russia continues massive retaliatory bombardments that kill civilians and destroy infrastructure.
