Singapore to undergo UN nuclear review in 2027

Singapore will undergo a review by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2027 as part of its planning for a possible move into nuclear power.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the assessment will examine whether the country is ready to make an informed decision, and it will help determine how safely any future plant could be built and operated.

The review matters because it is one of the steps that countries take before committing to civilian nuclear energy.

  • Singapore has no operating nuclear power plants today.
  • The IAEA was created in 1957 during the early Cold War.
  • Nuclear newcomer states often spend years building legal and technical capacity before construction begins.
