South Korea to train 500,000 drone warriors to counter North Korea

South Korea announced it will train 500,000 soldiers to use drones and manufacture over 100,000 units in the next three years to counter North Korean threats.

The Defense Ministry said frontline units will receive tens of thousands of unmanned systems as part of expanded drone capabilities. This large-scale military modernization aims to strengthen South Korea's defensive posture against its northern neighbor.

  • North Korea and South Korea have remained technically at war since the 1950-1953 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.
  • South Korea ranks as the world's fourth-largest economy by nominal GDP, according to 2025 data.
  • The Korean Peninsula is one of the most heavily militarized regions globally, with millions of troops stationed near the border.
