UK blocks visits by two left-wing US commentators

Britain barred U.S. commentators Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker from entering the country in early June 2026, canceling their travel permission before planned appearances in London and at Oxford University.

UK officials said their presence would not be conducive to the public good, while the commentators and their supporters linked the decision to their criticism of Israel.

The case matters because it highlights how European governments are weighing speech, public order and political pressure around the Israel-Gaza war.

UK Government

The Home Office said the travel permissions were canceled because the two men’s presence in Britain may not be conducive to the public good. Supporters of the move argued that people who spread hate or back proscribed groups should not be given a platform in the UK.

Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker

Uygur and Piker said the ban was politically motivated and targeted their criticism of Israel. They described the decision as an attack on free expression and said it came as they were preparing major public appearances.

Critics of the ban

Opponents in the UK said the government was acting inconsistently and was too quick to restrict entry over controversial speech. They argued that open debate should be allowed unless there is a clear security threat.
