WHO opens new Ebola treatment centre in eastern Congo

The World Health Organization opened a new Ebola treatment centre in Ituri province, eastern Congo, on May 30, 2026, as five patients recovered and officials said the outbreak remains active.

The cases are concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but health agencies warn the virus is still spreading faster than the response, making faster testing and medical access critical.

WHO and Congolese health officials

They present the new centre and the recoveries as signs that treatment can save lives, even without a licensed Ebola vaccine or cure for this strain. They say the priority now is to expand care, testing, and access to supplies so the outbreak can be contained.

MSF says the virus is still moving faster than aid and health teams, despite better-organized facilities and new support arriving. It is calling for faster testing, quicker deployment of workers, and reliable access for medical supplies.
