French peacekeeper dies in southern Lebanon ambush blamed on Hezbollah

A French UNIFIL peacekeeper, Staff Sergeant Florian Montorio, died from wounds sustained in a small-arms ambush in Ghandouriyeh, southern Lebanon, on Saturday. Three other soldiers were injured, two seriously, as the patrol cleared a route to an isolated outpost amid ongoing fighting. French President Emmanuel Macron and UNIFIL blamed Hezbollah, which denied responsibility, while Lebanese authorities and the UN launched investigations.

The attack occurred days after an Israel-Lebanon ceasefire agreement to end six weeks of clashes, raising concerns over truce stability and peacekeeper safety. It marks the second French soldier death linked to Middle East hostilities, prompting France to demand arrests and highlighting risks to UNIFIL in a volatile border area.

French Government

President Emmanuel Macron stated everything points to Hezbollah's responsibility for the ambush that killed Staff Sergeant Florian Montorio. He urged Lebanese authorities to arrest the perpetrators and ensure UNIFIL protection. Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin described the close-range attack during a route-clearing mission.

Hezbollah

The group denied any involvement in the ambush on UNIFIL peacekeepers. It called for caution against rushed accusations and expressed surprise at arbitrary blame. Hezbollah opposes planned talks with Israel amid the ceasefire efforts.

UNIFIL

The force reported its patrol came under fire from non-state actors in an area with significant Hezbollah presence. It described the deliberate attack as potentially amounting to war crimes and launched an investigation. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the incident.
