Russian troops inch toward Kostiantynivka outskirts in Donetsk region

Russian forces are advancing toward the outskirts of Kostiantynivka, a key Ukrainian stronghold in the eastern Donetsk region. Ukraine's army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi stated on May 2 that troops are repelling persistent Russian infiltration attempts using small infantry groups. Battlefield maps show Russians about one kilometer from the southern edge.

Kostiantynivka forms part of Ukraine's 'fortress belt' defending major cities like Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. A Russian foothold here could open paths to the rest of Donetsk and threaten Ukraine's eastern defenses. Ukrainian forces continue counter-sabotage operations amid rising assaults since April.

  • Donetsk Oblast, encompassing Kostiantynivka, spans 26,517 square kilometers in eastern Ukraine's steppe region.
  • Sloviansk, 35 km north, hosted the war's first major battle in July 2014.
  • H-20 highway follows the historic route of the Roman-era Trajan's Road.
