Israel intercepts Gaza-bound aid flotilla vessels in international waters near Greece

Israeli forces seized multiple aid ships from a flotilla bound for Gaza in international waters near Crete, Greece, earlier this week. More than 160 activists on board were taken to the Greek island after the interception, with most released there while a few faced questioning. Six Australians were among the detained before their release.

The flotilla aimed to deliver humanitarian aid and challenge Israel's naval blockade of Gaza amid ongoing restrictions. Organizers reported damage to vessels like engines and navigation systems, but Israeli officials confirmed participants were unharmed and acted preemptively due to the fleet's size. Some vessels continued their mission while others reached safe waters.

Activist Organizers

Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla in international waters, disabling engines and navigation on dozens of vessels. This left civilians stranded ahead of a storm and aimed to prevent aid delivery to Gaza under the blockade. Remaining ships plan to continue breaking the illegal siege.

Israeli Officials

The navy intercepted vessels before they entered Israeli waters given the large number involved. Participants remained unharmed throughout the operation. A few activists were detained briefly for questioning before release.

Israel-Hamas War

Israel and Hamas are in the second phase of the U.S.-backed Gaza peace plan, with the last living hostages already returned and Israel still holding a large security presence inside Gaza.[5][7][8] The main dispute now is over Hamas disarmament, the scope and pace of Israeli withdrawal, and who will govern Gaza after the fighting.
