Australia agrees uranium supply deal with India

Australia and India agreed on Thursday to supply Australian uranium for India’s civilian nuclear energy programme during a visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Australia.

The deal matters because it supports India’s clean-energy and nuclear-power plans while also expanding cooperation on renewables, critical minerals and green hydrogen.

  • Australia has strict laws on uranium exports and generally requires buyers to accept international safeguards.
  • India is one of the world’s fastest-growing energy markets and is expanding low-carbon power to meet rising demand.
  • Green hydrogen has become a major policy focus for several countries seeking to cut industrial emissions.
