India aims to lead global capability centres, not just host them
India Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced Thursday that the country plans to become indispensable to the global knowledge economy by building an ecosystem to support 5,000 Global Capability Centres by 2030.
This strategy aims to shift India's role from a passive host to a leading partner in the worldwide business services sector. The initiative matters as it positions India as a critical node in the global economy, potentially driving long-term economic growth and high-value job creation.
- The term GCC was originally adopted to distinguish these modern tech hubs from older, traditional outsourcing centers.
- India already hosts over 1,600 GCCs, making it the largest global hub for such operations outside the US.
- By 2030, GCCs in India are expected to employ over 2.5 million people in high-skill roles.
