Japan to invest ¥150 billion in Rakuten's domestic satellite project

Japan announced a ¥150 billion investment in a Rakuten Group-led consortium to develop a homegrown low-Earth orbit satellite communications network, known as the Japan Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communications Project.

The government secured these funds in the 2025 supplementary budget to create a domestic alternative to services like Starlink, marking a major step in national telecommunications independence.
