Spain and Brazil demand Israel release nationals detained from Gaza aid flotilla

Israeli forces intercepted a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in international waters off Greece on Thursday, detaining over 175 activists and taking a Spanish citizen of Palestinian origin, Saif Abu Keshek, and a Brazilian national, Thiago Avila, to Israel for questioning. Spain's Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez condemned the action as an illegal abduction, demanding their immediate release. Brazil joined the call for the safe return of its citizen.

The incident escalates tensions over Israel's blockade of Gaza, with Spain warning it stains bilateral ties and both countries having withdrawn ambassadors. Organizers accused Israel of kidnapping and destroying equipment, while Israel linked the activists to a US-sanctioned group tied to Hamas. The detentions highlight ongoing international friction over aid access to the Palestinian territory.

Spanish Government

Israel illegally detained Saif Abu Keshek in international waters outside its jurisdiction. The Spanish citizen must be released immediately to return home. This action further damages relations with Israel.

Israeli Perspective

The two activists were taken for questioning by law enforcement as they are affiliated with the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad. This group is sanctioned by the US Treasury for acting on behalf of Hamas. The interception enforced the blockade on Gaza.

Flotilla Organizers

Israel kidnapped 211 people more than 1,000 kilometers from Gaza and smashed their equipment. Activists face a calculated death trap at sea after the interception. Many were forcibly transferred and some report torture.

  • Spain recognized Palestinian statehood in 2024, heightening its criticism of Israel's Gaza policies.
  • Israel's Gaza blockade began in 2007 after Hamas seized control of the territory.
  • PCPA organized prior Gaza flotillas, leading to its US sanctions for Hamas ties.

Israel-Hamas War

Israel and Hamas are in the second phase of the U.S.-backed Gaza peace plan, with the last living hostages already returned and Israel still holding a large security presence inside Gaza.[5][7][8] The main dispute now is over Hamas disarmament, the scope and pace of Israeli withdrawal, and who will govern Gaza after the fighting.
